Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon 2023

Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon in Bangalore successfully completed on 11th - 12th March.

9 teams out of total 60 applicants have attended the Grand Finale to make the physical protypes of the musical instruments.

The director of this Hackathon event in India, Anil Sasidharan from Sony India Software Centre Pvt. Ltd. commented that “We just started our journey. Hopefully we would love to organize this event every year and make it much bigger and more energized! ‘Yuru’ is the place where Creativity meets Innovation. I wish the innovative “Yuru" instrument will be born here in India."

The 1st prize won by “Chordzilla" by team “Hakuna Matata". They created a guitar instrument that enables user to play with only one finger and configuring tones using mobile App.

There are two 2nd prize winners.

a) Team “Celadon". made “Groove Glove", a wearable musical instrument to play the tones of various musical instruments with just two fingers.

Sony - Runner-up - Rhythumb Ring

b) Team “Sonic Squad" created “Rhythumb Ring" (though the prototype is unfinished), which enables user to control the musical scale with fingers by moving freely in the air.

Sony - Entertainment Award - Sony Musical Face

The entertainment award went to the most “fun" team “Impulsive Duo" for creating “Sony Musical Face" which can play music by a facial expression.

Sony - KANDO Award - Wind notes

“KANDO" award given to the most creative team brings originality, cool, “wow", went to “Wind notes" by team “Music Blowers". This team created the device that can transfer the breath to musical instrument sound.

Sony - Accessibility Award - Air beats

Accessibility award for noteworthy contribution to enhance the accessibility to music, went to “Air beats" by team “SARGAM".

They created the instrument that you can wear in your arm and play music by the light and the sound.

Sony - Immortal Innovator Award - EUREKA

“Immortal Innovator Award” by IITM went to “EUREKA” by team “JERICHO”. You can wear the switch in your finger and create sounds by pushing it.

Sony - Ingenious Maker Award - Musical Grip

“Ingenious Master Award” by SISC went to “Musical Grip” by team “AD harmony”. This device is pen-shaped, it creates sounds by the motion of writing.

Sony - Spresense Master Award - Movesic.ly

“SPRESENSE Master Award" for utilizing most of the Spresense microcomputer board by SONY went to “Movesic.ly" by team “Movsicly". They created the instrument controlling sounds by shaking stick-shaped device in the air.

The main sponsor from Sony Music Entertainment, Nozomu Kaji, chief producer, MX team, Edge Tech PJ Dept. commented “Although it was first time organizing this event on outside of Japan, I felt it was great to host this in India as in cultural, people wise. We are looking forward to do this event in other countries not only in India in future."

Sony India Software Centre Co-sponsors Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon 2023

  • Engineers, people with creative ideas, designers, artists, musicians are all welcome to form a team consisting of minimum 2 and maximum 4 persons.
  • Each team is expected to develop “Yuru Musical Instruments" “Yuru" generally means fun, free, generous, flexible, easy to approach etc. in Japanese.

Bangalore, 12th January 2023: Sony India Software Centre Pvt. Ltd. in association with World Yuru Music Association are organizing “Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon 2023" in India. It is expected to take place in the 2nd week of March,2023 in Bangalore. Engineers, Designers, Artists, Musicians, people with creative ideas can all participate and form a team. With the idea of "giving everyone the pleasure of playing musical instruments" participants is invited to develop "Yuru Musical Instruments". This will be a competition and the winning teams will be awarded with cash prizes. The teams can create any instrument they would like to play music on.

Anyone above 18 years old from anywhere can participate in producing music regardless of gender or ability.The team will consist of minimum 2 and maximum 4 persons. Each team is expected to develop a “Yuru Musical Instruments". "Yuru Musical Instruments" are casual instruments creatively designed for playing music by novice for fun and entertainment. These instruments may include electronic, acoustic, or nontraditional components. Under Sony’s Purpose to "Fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology," various Sony’s Projects support this event and Sony group companies will provide devices like, MESHTM, toioTM, SPRESENSETM, etc. to the teams shortlisted for the Hackathon. For example, SPRESENSETM is a compact board computer that combines low power consumption with a GPS reception function and a high-resolution audio codec, and it is possible to develop unique music instruments (https://developer.sony.com/develop/spresense/). Each team can use the devices freely to give shape to their ideas presented in the Ideathon and create unique Yuru Musical Instrument.

The Ideathon will be conducted online with no limitation on the participants. 10 teams from this Ideathon will be shortlisted for the Hackathon which is to be conducted in Bangalore. Participants will have to showcase the Yuru Musical Instrument developer and perform on stage using the same to the judges in person. Judges of the event will be Experts from Sony, IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation. The winner will be awarded with Rs. 50,000 and the next 2 winners will be awarded with Rs. 25,000 each.

    3. If you provide us with any Personal Data relating to a third party (e.g. information of your spouse, children, parents, and/or employees), by submitting such Personal Data to us, you represent to us that you have obtained the consent of the third party to provide us with their Personal Data for the purposes as listed below.
